Mount Snow is the closest kid-friendly Vermont ski resort to NYC! Located in the Green Mountains, this accessible getaway is great for a family weekend trip, with multiple hotels located on-mountain. It’s also part of the Epic Pass Program and a favorite for parents with beginner skiers. In fact, the Mount Snow Ski School offers a great kids program for kids as young as five, including a first-time program. You can even book private skiing and snowboarding lessons for little ones starting at three years old! There are full-day or half-day options for each program. Plus, a full-day Skiing and Snowboarding Mountain Program for kids ages seven to fourteen.

Additionally, families will love Mount Snow for its well-known snowmaking coverage, world-class grooming, and modern facilities. Finally, remember to visit The LaunchPad area around Mount Snow’s Discovery Center too, which has multiple “magic carpets” (conveyor belts) to take new skiers up the mountain! The Burton Riglet Terrain Park has easy slopes for kids too, while other terrain areas range from gentle beginner slopes to more challenging black diamonds. No matter what your needs are, expect only the best at this family ski resort in Vermont.

Where To Stay

Mount Snow boasts numerous resorts to accommodate families of all ages and interests. We recommend staying at the Grand Summit Resort, located at the base of the mountain. The Grand Summit Resort features convenient ski-in/ski-out access for families who can’t wait to hit the slopes, sizable rooms for large groups, and attentive service. Here, you’ll find anything you could possibly need during your Vermont family ski vacation, including a farm-to-table restaurant, an on-site convenience store, and access to a nearby rental shop. It’s also a six-minute walk from the famous Snow Lake. Be sure to enjoy the heated pool, hit the gym, or relax at the spa in your downtime! Families looking for a more affordable vacation on Mount Snow may prefer smaller renting Airbnb or VBRO.

Kid-Friendly Activities For Non-Skiers

Mount Snow is also one of the best places for a non-ski vacation in Vermont! If you’re venturing outside the slopes, consider snow tubing. Mount Snow is known as a family-friendly tubing destination for a reason: there are eight lanes on its designated Tubing Hill! Located on the base of Mount Snow between the Main Lodge and the Grand Summit Resort, this is a great family experience for all skill levels. Take a thrilling ride down the mountain and let a “magic carpet” bring you back up! For more extensive family excursions, you could also book an outing, like a Mount Snow Snowmobile Tour. A great excursion for teens and older kids, a knowledgeable instructor will show you how to soar down trails and across frozen lakes. Prepare for an epic winter adventure! Mount Snow is surely one of the best family ski resorts to visit in winter in Vermont.

Okemo provides families with multiple accommodation options. Many of our contributors enjoy staying at the famous Jackson Gore Inn, which spans three massive buildings at the base of the mountain. With huge indoor and outdoor pools, nightly babysitting available, and ski-in/ski-out options, it’s no wonder the Jackson Gore Inn is one of the best family ski resorts in Vermont. The Jackson Gore Inn also provides easy access to the Jackson Gore Ski Center, where you’ll find restaurants, ski rentals, and anything else you need to keep your day running smoothly. Though also not available this year, you’ll find ice skating at the Okemo Ice House at Jackson Gore, with skate rentals. Warm yourself up at the fireplace next door after you’re done! Adventurous kids will love a chance to ride the nearby Timber Ripper Mountain Coaster, which is open all year round to provide families with a trip down the mountain! Local tour companies also offer dog-sledding for families to explore the winter landscape. You can play golf on a simulator at the Nordic Center too. Or try snowshoeing for family fun!

Stratton Mountain Resort is an exotic escape nestled in Vermont’s Green Mountains! Modeled after classic European ski resorts, it features almost 100 paved trails, a walkable village, and amenities to entertain families. It’s also renowned for its fantastic kids’ skiing program! Here, those as young as three years old can take private skiing or snowboarding lessons, guided by instructors at the Stratton Ski School. There are also morning or afternoon Big Cub” group lessons for children between four and twelve years old, divided by age rather than skill level. Terrain parks range from advanced to beginner. Kids will especially love the Progression Park! Plus, teens between thirteen and seventeen can learn how to ski or snowboard in small groups of four.

Though Stratton is somewhat expensive compared to other ski programs, many families find the extra attention worthwhile. That’s why it’s one of the best family ski resorts in Vermont!

Where To Stay

Stratton Mountain is one of the best cute ski towns in Vermont! With a mix of well-known hotels and lodges, families of all sizes can choose what’s best for them. We recommend the Black Bear Lodge for a quaint stay, featuring rustic rooms with up to two king beds. Plus, a hot tub, sauna, and restaurant on-site! This family-friendly hotel is also just a few minutes from Stratton’s lower chairlifts. From here, you can shuttle to Stratton Village, which features family-friendly restaurants, shops, and more. And kids under seventeen stay for free! If you’re looking for something more upscale, consider booking a room at The Equinox Golf Resort & Spa. This historic hotel features an indoor swimming pool, a spa for parents, and access to kid-friendly activities such as ice skating. An outdoor fire pit with picturesque views of the mountain makes nighttime here all the more special!

Kid-Friendly Activities For Non-Skiers

Non-skiers will love Stratton! When kids are tired or you just want to switch up your family itinerary, you’ll find lots to experience outside the slopes. For one, take an exhilarating ride at the Coca-Cola Tube Park, which is located in Stratton’s Sun Bowl at the base of Big Ben Terrain Park. Kids of all ages can enjoy four lanes of high-speed fun! There’s also an ice skating rink, The Mill House, centered in the middle of The Commons. Ice skate rentals are available for children while supplies last. If your family has some more free time, you could also leave Stratton Mountain and head to the nearby town of Manchester, renowned for its multiple museums and historical significance. While you’re in town, be sure to check out the Northshire Bookstore! Or, take a glass-blowing lesson at Manchester Hot Glass, a ceramic store stuffed with handmade goodies!

What Our Families Say

“My 4-year-olds first day on skis was at Stratton this past winter. It’s affordable and very family-friendly. When looking at the Stratton ski school, they couldn’t offer the same services as Bromley. Definitely a smaller mountain, but very family-friendly.”

Sugarbush Mountain

Families searching for smaller crowds should consider Sugarbush! Located near Warren, this resort overlooks Vermont’s Mad River Valley, providing unparalleled views. It’s also part of the Ikon Pass Program, offering a low-key experience further from NYC and Boston. Plus, there’s a great first-time and advanced skier program here! Kids three and older can take private ski and ride lessons, where they’ll receive personalized attention based on their skill level. Subject to availability depending on the season, there are also group lessons for teens over thirteen and adults who are trying skiing for the first time.  Plus, after the fourth lesson you take at Sugarbush, you’ll also get discounted season passes! With freestyle, advanced, and beginner trails, there are plenty of terrains to choose from, too.

Kids will enjoy green runs like Snowflake, Crackerjack, or Sugar Run located toward the bottom of the mountain. Adaptive skiing is available for kids with disabilities.

Where To Stay With Kids

Sugarbush Mountain offers families a choice of hotels. Though there are multiple lodging options to house larger groups, many prefer to book the Sugarbush Resort. This family-friendly hotel offers amenities for all ages, spacious rooms, and easy access to the mountain. Here, you’ll also find an indoor saltwater pool, a year-round daycare option, and a fun Kids Adventure Zone for children! If it’s too cold outside, then little ones can play ping pong, jump on a trampoline, or challenge each other to games. There’s also an indoor climbing gym called the Valley Rock Gym.  Staying at Sugarbush Resort also puts you near the Mad River Valley, where you could easily spend an afternoon exploring. Go ice fishing, eat at a local restaurant, or visit the Vermont Icelandic Horse farm to ride on an authentic Scandanavian stallion! No wonder Sugarbush is one of the best family ski resorts in Vermont.

Kid-Friendly Activities For Non-Skiers

Sugarbush Mountain offers families a typical Vermont ski experience. That said, there aren’t many activities to keep kids entertained off the slopes as compared to other family ski resorts in Vermont. The Sugarbush Health & Recreation Center features a gym, sauna, and indoor pool if you want to unwind and warm-up. You could also rent a pair of snowshoes and take a self-guided or guided tour through the woods, where you’ll encounter various wildlife up close. Sugarbush Mountain Resort also offers families a series of Cabin Cat Adventures, where you’ll get a glimpse of the mountain like never before. Enjoy a one-hour private ride at dusk in the famous Lincoln Limo! Or, enjoy amazing local food at restaurants such as Allyn’s Lodge or Castlerock Pub. If you feel like venturing out, you won’t have to head too far. Stowe and Burlington, two family-friendly Vermont towns, are right in the vicinity!

What Our Families Say

“We have a place at Sugarbush and I really do feel their ski school is incredible. They have a solid program for learning to ski, racing, freestyle, and backcountry touring. It doesn’t have a huge nightlife or much for the kids off the slopes. For someone who grew up in VT, it feels like VT. That’s my pick if you are setting up a home base.”

Jay Peak is a great family ski resort in Vermont for advanced skiers. Located in northern Vermont, it’s popular for its beautiful open glades, abundance of snow, and off-mountain activities. Since it’s located right on the Canadian border, however, the trails here can be icy, steep, and not ideal for beginners. Kids of all ages can still enroll in private lessons to sharpen their skills. Parents who live in Vermont may prefer an 8-week ski program instead. Jay Peak also offers families the option to book a Vennedag, or a group session with skiers of mixed ages and skills. Two JayCare locations on-mountain look after little ones who don’t want to ski for half or full days.

Plus, if you’re looking for a variety of terrain, you’ll find glades, tree skiing, and other options at Jay Peak. In fact, the mountain offers some of the best beginner and intermediate tree skiing on the East Coast! Even the glades are ideal for new skiers. Families can also check out “The Zone,” Jay Peak’s learning area, which features 80 acres of wide, gentle terrain, and introductory glades.

Jay Peak offers discounted lift rates for toddlers. Learn more here.

Where To Stay

Jay Peak is prime real estate for Vermont’s most family-friendly hotels. Many of our FLT contributors recommend staying at the Jay Peak Resort to make the experience simpler, though. This luxury mountainside resort offers families delicious on-site dining, panoramic views, and amenities for all ages. Choose from different accommodations ranging from regular hotel suites to one-, two-, or three-bedroom cabin lodges, ski-in, ski-out rooms, and slopeside condominiums for larger groups. Of course, kids will also have access to all the hotel amenities, ranging from an indoor water park to an indoor arcade. Parents will appreciate a visit to The Taiga Spa, where you can get a massage or facial. Overall, you can’t beat the convenience here. Whether it’s the slopes, a bite to eat, or a place to relax, it’s never too far away. Don’t forget to stop at the general store on your way up to the mountain!

Kid-Friendly Activities For Non-Skiers

Jay Peak is just as fun for non-ski vacations in Vermont! As a popular destination all year round, there’s a lot to do off the slopes. Kids will love splashing at The Pump House Indoor Waterpark, which includes a kids’ play area and numerous jumbo slides. Families can also visit the Clips & Reel Recreation Center during the winter, where you can book private sessions in the arcade, climbing center, or even a state-of-the-art movie theater! And that’s not all the winter fun available here. At the Ice Haus Indoor Arena, kids of all ages can enjoy a full-fledged NHL-sized ice rink, where they could skate or play ice hockey. Or, try snowshoeing at The Nordic Center, which features twelve well-groomed trails. Countless activities plus delicious on-mountain dining makes Jay Peak one of the best family ski resorts in Vermont!

What Our Families Say

“Jay Peak is one of our favorites. Slopeside condos, great skiing, indoor water park, ice skating rink, rock climbing, and a movie theater. I’m probably missing some other good stuff. We’ve gone Easter break a few times and the pricing is better than any other location we’ve been to. Private lessons for all ages.”

Stowe is one of the best luxury ski resorts in Vermont to visit with kids! Owned by Vail Resorts, it’s known as one of the most upscale ski resorts on the East Coast and comprises two mountains: Mount Mansfield and Spruce Peak. It’s also part of the Epic Pass program, and recommended for families who have more advanced skiing experience. Mostly because the trails are steeper than usual here, with many accessible ones on Mount Mansfield categorized as mid-level blue runs. Though there are a few beginner trails on Spruce Peak for kids skiing for the first time, they’re usually pretty crowded. Kids between three and four years old can still take private skiing lessons, though! There are also morning and afternoon classes for five to six-year-olds and then kids seven to twelve years old. Plus, a daycare for little ones who don’t ski means everyone can enjoy their stay!

Stowe offers free lift tickets for kids four and under. Learn more here.

Where To Stay

As one of the best cute ski towns in Vermont, Stowe offers a range of family-friendly hotels nearby! The Lodge at Spruce Peak is one of the most popular accommodations for families who want a ski-in, ski-out option, as it’s the only nearby ski resort that offers it. This luxury, Alpine-style hotel also provides guests with top-notch amenities, with rooms ranging from cozy mountain cabins to sweeping Penthouse suites. Plus, staying here also gives kids access to all the mountain’s activities, many of which are organized directly on The Lodge at Spruce Peak’s property. If you’re looking for a more rustic feel, you can also consider staying at the Topnotch Resort, which is also upscale but located a little further from the mountain. Families also enjoy the Trapp Family Lodge, which is about a twenty-minute drive away from Stowe.

Kid-Friendly Activities For Non-Skiers

Non-skiers won’t be bored at Stowe Mountain Resort! This quaint ski town in Vermont offers ice climbing, sleigh rides, snowshoeing, and more. Another feature families love is how easily accessible everything is, either by foot or a short ride on the gondola that travels between mountains. That means it’s fairly simple for families to avoid driving much. You can also reach The Village at Spruce Peak, which is relatively large compared to other ski villages nearby. Here, you’ll find apres-ski restaurants, shopping boutiques, and kid-friendly activities to enjoy. Look for the Ice Skating Rink located steps away from the Spruce Camp Base Lodge, which is free and open to the public. And don’t forget to visit the Adventure Center! You’ll find a rock climbing wall with sections for all skill levels. Spruce Peak also hosts rotating weekly activities for families to enjoy together, like board game nights or arts & crafts.

What Our Families Say

“We have always enjoyed Stowe and stayed at The Lodge At Spruce Peak. They have a daycare for little ones, ski school for those old enough so everyone gets to enjoy it. Plus, staying there while everyone was skiing but still being able to walk around, stroll my baby to sleep, eat lunch without having to drive was super convenient.”
