If you are doing a day trip to Lecce with a car, arrive early because parking can be challenging. There are parking options surrounding the old city, most of which require a parking fee. We do not recommend driving within the ancient city because streets are very narrow and parking is sparse for non-residents. You can also reach Lecce with Trenitalia. To reach Lecce, there are direct trains from many Italian cities, including Rome and Bologna. Alternatively, direct routes can also be made from Bari (just shy of 2 hours), Monopoli (about 75 minutes), and Brindisi (about 30 minutes).

Then, check out Piazza del Duomo, one of the most beautiful parts of Lecce, with an intimate feel and views of ornate buildings and churches.

If you’re interested in visiting more than one of the many churches in Lecce, the city tourism office offers bundled tickets. Basilica di Santa Croce is a fine example of extravagant baroque architecture with a lovely courtyard. Then, Chiesa di Santa Chiara is a striking Catholic church with many ornate religious works inside. Start your exploration with an enchanting walk through Porta Alfonsina, which leads you into Centro Storico. Take a private tour to learn more about Otranto’s history. Families can meander through a maze of winding streets filled with charming local shops and tasty restaurants in the old town. The Otranto Castle is a highlight for kids, especially given its unique shape. Then, Cattedrale di Santa Maria Annunziata is a stunning example of local churches here. Families will be treated to an array of natural wonders outside the old city, including Bauxite Cave. For something truly unique, outdoorsy families can consider embarking on a half-day Hiking & Trekking Adventure: Otranto, Bauxite Quarry Lake, and The Idro Valley. Alternatively, you can also head to Punta Pelascia to explore stunning natural land and a lighthouse. As the easternmost point of Italy, the best time to visit is sunrise.

If you’re interested in getting in the water, consider Grotta della Poesia with older kids and teens. This natural pool surrounded by rocky cliffs will impress even the pickiest teen travelers. The beaches of this area will impress too! Larger than the options further north near Monopoli, beaches here tend to be long stretches of sandy coastline surrounded by nature. Baia Dei Turchi is undoubtedly one of the best places to splash in the sun with kids. For a cozier beach, consider Porto Badisco. Finally, Baia delle Orte and Spiaggia di Torre dell’Orso are two additional options to consider.

Where to Eat in Otranto with Kids

Simple ingredients and classic seafood dishes characterize this region. Be sure to try polpo alla pignata, one of the most traditional dishes here. For seafood, pasta, and a beachfront terrace, head to Il Ghiottone Otranto Ristorante Pizzeria. Retro Gusto, Palato Osteria Romana, and Vecchia Otranto are also great family-friendly restaurants in Otranto.

Where to Stay in Otranto with Kids

Otranto has many kid-friendly hotels for families staying overnight in the area. If you want an option with a pool, Hotel Villa Rosa Antico is an excellent option. Then, Palazzo De Mori features suite-style rooms and a private beach. Finally, kids three and under stay free at Cala Dei Normanni – Camere Sul Lungomare. No wonder Otranto is one of the best cities to visit in Puglia with kids!
