If you are looking for a way to jump-start your next family vacation, then you’ll want to consider the brand new Capital One Venture X Credit Card. With the card, you’ll earn 100,000 bonus miles (after meeting the minimum spend requirement), which is worth a fixed $1,000 towards any travel purchase you make. You can put this towards a trip to Disney, a relaxing hotel in the Caribbean, a flight to any destination you desire, and much more.

However, this premium card does carry a $395 annual fee. Fortunately, there are many benefits you’ll receive on an annual basis that will help offset the fee, all while also giving your family a more luxury travel experience. Keep reading to learn more about the new Capital One Venture X Card and how it can benefit families!

New cardmembers to the Capital One Venture X Credit Card will earn 100,000 bonus miles after spending $10,000 on the card within the first 6 months of cardmembers. This is a decent amount of spending, so you’ll only want to apply for this card if you are able to spend this month. This averages close to $1,600 per month.

As part of this sign-up offer, you’ll also earn a $200 vacation rental credit. With this credit, for the first $200 spent on vacation rentals, you’ll receive a statement credit back. For example, this covers you towards AirBnB and VRBO reservations. For the first year, this immediately helps bring down the cost of the annual fee significantly. If this credit is used to the fullest, you can think of the annual fee as a more palatable $195 for the first year.

How to Earn and Redeem Capital One Venture X Miles

A man holds a credit card while sitting with his family looking at a computer.

Earning Miles

With the Capital One Venture X card, your family will earn 10 miles on all hotels and car rentals booked through Capital One Travel, 5 miles on all flights booked through Capital One Travel, and then 2 miles per dollar spent on all other purchases. Without having to worry about many category bonuses, this is an incredibly easy card to use for families. It also means you are earning 2% back, towards travel, on most purchases made with the card.

Redeeming Miles

Redeeming miles earned is even easier! With this card, you don’t have to worry about blackout dates or award availability. To redeem your miles, all you have to do is make your travel-related purchase on the card. Within 90 days you can wipe away your purchase using your miles where 1 mile equals 1 dollar. This means if you have a $100 purchase, you can redeem 10,000 miles. The purchase will then be wiped away from your monthly statement. This is why the 100,000 miles earned from the sign-up bonus is worth a fixed $100,000 towards any travel purchase you make. Your miles will also never expire as long as your account is open.

For the more experienced loyalty program families, you can instead transfer your miles to 17 different partner loyalty programs. Unfortunately, though, its airline partners are international airlines. While these programs aren’t as straightforward, you can easily get significantly more value out of your miles. On the hotel front, you can transfer your miles to Wyndham Rewards and eventually Choice Privileges.

When transferring your miles to a partner program, you are typically transferring at a 1-to-1 ratio, where for every 1,000 miles transferred, you’re earning 1,000 miles in the respective program. (Although a few programs have slightly different transfer rates). When transferring your miles, the miles are then in the partner programs account. You can then redeem your miles directly with that program. While redeeming your miles through this method can be more cumbersome for some, your miles can be worth significantly more. For example, you can redeem your miles to fly business class across the pond and fly in comfort.

Capital One Venture X Card Benefits

For a family credit card, $395 can be quite expensive. Fortunately, though, there are many benefits that you’ll receive annually that’ll help offset the fee.

Annual $100 Towards Travel

One of the easiest ways to help offset the fee is by taking into consideration the bonus miles the card gives year after year. On your cards anniversary, and then every subsequent year, you’ll earn 10,000 bonus miles. If you redeem those miles towards a fixed travel purchase, this equals a flat $100. Or, if you transfer your miles to a partner airline, these bonus miles could be worth substantially more.

Starting with the second year with the card, this effectively brings the annual fee down to $295. Since the miles are incredibly easy to redeem, all families should have no problem using the 10,000 bonus miles.

$300 Travel Credit

Annually, including your first year with the card, you’ll receive up to $300 in travel credits with the Capital One Venture X card. The one caveat is that this is only for travel booked through the Capital One Travel site. If you typically book with a hotel or airline directly, this travel credit won’t apply.

The Capital One Travel site also offers a feature where it’ll predict flight prices with 95% accuracy and alert you when to book. They’ll also refund you the difference (up to a preset amount) if they tell you when to book and the flight goes down in price.

Additionally, when you book through the Capital One Travel site, you’ll earn 5 miles per dollar spent on hotels and car rentals and 10 miles per dollar spent on airfare. This is a significant number of miles you’ll earn which you can then immediately put towards wiping out a travel purchase.

With the full $300 travel credit taken into consideration, this effectively brings the annual fee down by $300. Combined with the bonus miles earned, this is a $400 benefit, which immediately outweighs the annual fee.

The Capital One Venture X card will reimburse you up to $100 for your Global Entry or TSA PreCheck application — once every four years. And since Global Entry costs $100 (which includes TSA PreCheck too), you are essentially getting this airport access for free.

If you already have Global Entry, you can also use the credit towards other family members. The name on the credit card and application do not have to match. All you need to do is pay for the application with your credit card and you’ll automatically be reimbursed.

Airport Lounge Access

When traveling with a family, having a space to sit and relax while waiting for your airplane is ideal. Especially in the event of a delayed flight.

Capital One Venture X card members will receive a Priority Pass Select membership. This membership will give your family access to over 1,300 airport lounges and restaurants worldwide. Each cardmember has the ability to bring two guests for free. However, you can add an authorized user onto your card for no additional fee, and authorized user cards also receive the same complimentary Priority Pass Select membership. This means, you and a partner can each have the card and both people can bring up to two guests. And you’ll only be paying one annual fee. This means a family of six can receive complimentary access to an airport lounge every time they fly. And with airport lounges offering food and snacks, this is an easy way to save money — and relax — while traveling.

The card also gives access to Capital One Lounges, but right now there’s only one lounge open in Dallas). There are also two more — Denver and Washington-Dulles in the pipeline.

Capital One Venture X Protection Benefits

While the miles earned can offer your family some unbelievable travel opportunities, there are many other favorable benefits that you’ll receive simply by using the card.

Cell Phone Protection

By using your Capital One Venture X Credit Card to pay your monthly family cell phone bills, you’ll receive baked-in insurance. In the case your phone is stolen or damaged, you’ll be covered up to $800 per claim to repair or replace the phone. There’s a $50 deductible per claim and you can file up to two claims per rolling 12 month period.

I personally have used this benefit quite often and have never had an issue. With kids using my phone more than I’d like to admit, using a credit card with cell phone protection has saved my family a ton of money.

Travel Coverage

When traveling with your family, you’ll want to make sure you are using a credit card that offers travel protection. This can help you save money if an unfortunate event were to happen. With this card, you’ll receive trip delay protection, trip cancellation protection, primary rental car protection, and lost luggage reimbursement.

For example, if you need to cancel an upcoming flight for a covered reason, you’ll be protected for up to $2,000 per person for common carrier fares. This can come in quite handy if you have non-refundable airline tickets and the airline won’t budge with reimbursement.

Or, if you are on your way home from your vacation and your flight is delayed for a covered reason, you’ll be able to submit your out-of-pocket expenses. With the Capital One Venture X card, if your flight is delayed six hours or more, or requires an overnight, you can submit up to $500 per ticket in claims. This can cover any additional hotel expenses you might incur, extra taxi rides, and even food and clothing. And even if you used miles for your fare, as long as you paid some portion on the card (such as taxes and fees), you’re still eligible for the protection benefit.

Purchase Protection

If you purchase an item with your Capital One Venture X card, you’ll be covered as well.

With this card, if your item is stolen or damaged in the first 90 days of purchase, you are covered. The card will cover you for up to $10,000 per claim and up to $50,000 per cardholder. For example, let’s say you just bought a new iPhone and it breaks within the first few days. As long as you made the purchase with your card, you’ll be able to submit a claim to have the cost of repairing or replacing the item reimbursed.

Or, if you are looking to return an item that was purchased within 90 days, but the retailer won’t take it back. Your card will cover you. As long as you paid for the item with your Capital One Venture X card, you can be reimbursed up to $300 per claim and $1,000 per cardholder.

Is the Capital One Venture X Credit Card Good for Families?

Earning points and miles from new credit card sign-up offers is one of the best ways to earn free travel. Especially since you can use the miles you earn towards any travel purchase you desire! However, you’ll need to make sure that your family’s expenses can meet the spend requirement to earn the 100,000 bonus miles.

The card is also expensive, we aren’t going to sugarcoat it. But compared to other premium cards it is actually not as expensive. The card also comes with many perks.

In the first year, you’ll earn 100,000 miles (worth $1,000), $200 towards AirBnB or VRBO, $100 towards Global Entry, and a $300 travel credit. That results in $1,600 in value. Minus the $395 annual fee, you are up to $1,205. Then add in the travel protection, purchase protection, cell phone protection, and airport lounge access.

In the second year (and every year thereafter), you’ll receive $300 in travel credits and 10,000 bonus miles (worth $100). This will give you $400 in value, which evens out with the $395 fee paid. But, you’ll then still continue to receive the same protection benefits and unlimited lounge access while traveling.

You’ll also be earning 2 miles per dollar spent, which is a significant return towards travel. And your miles are extremely easy to use. For a family that wants flexibility, this is definitely a great card to consider. Especially for the first year with the strong sign-up bonus.

Happy Travels!
