Afterward, let kids find a pumpkin to carve or decorate from Kelp’s Greenhouse & Pumpkin Patch. Finally, locals won’t let you leave town without tasting the iconic persimmon pudding or caramel apple sundae at Miller’s Ice Cream House. Parke County, IN

Located in the southern portion of the state, this resort community is tucked into the rolling hills of the Hoosier National Forest. It’s also a stunning place to watch the dazzling green, yellow, and red leaves change colors every mid-October through early November! 

To see some of the best fall colors, visit the Hoosier National Forest. Families can explore via a scenic drive, a horseback ride, or an active hike. The 1-mile Ferguson Trail (running between French Lick and West Baden Springs Hotels) is filled with vibrant fall colors and easy enough for young kids. You could also rent a bike to venture further into the forest. Or, see the fall colors on a boat cruise instead. From wildlife to wine cruises, there are endless options on nearby Patoka Lake, departing from the Patoka Lake Marina. At Wilstem Wildlife Park in Paoli, there’s also the Wilstem Fall Festival of Lights every October. Of course, one of the best ways to see the scenery in French Lick is by riding the French Lick Scenic Railway. There’s even a special Dinosaur Adventure Train that kids will love!

From mid-October through the end of October, families can enjoy cooler weather, fun outdoor activities, and more seasonal fun. 

To see the shimmering fall colors in Lake of the Ozarks, loop around the lake on Highways 5, 54, and 52. Or, take a hike! There are two state parks nearby: Lake of the Ozarks State Park near Kaiser and Ha Ha Tonka State Park near Camdenton. Early October – Late October
