Prepare for your next family adventure with our ultimate guide to ski gear for kids! As winter snowfall hits the mountaintops annually, many families get ready to hit the slopes across Europe or the United States. Skiing is a great way to stay active during winter months and an even better way to get out and explore with your family! Plus, there’s nothing quite like an Apres-ski after a long day, followed by a hot chocolate and bonding time around a warm fire. When you’re traveling with children, however, packing for an extensive ski trip can seem somewhat complicated. Luckily, there are a few must-have items any parent should bring to ski with kids. To help you prepare for your next outdoor adventure, we’ve compiled an Ultimate Guide to Ski Gear for Kids. Take a look next time you’re planning to hit the slopes as a family!

Ski Helmets for Kids

Safety is crucial when skiing with kids. As such, helmets are the first thing you should consider buying for your next family ski trip! They top the list of gear recommendations within our buying guide for kids’ ski gear. Parents usually rent this quintessential gear directly from a ski shop (whether local to you or in your final destination) to ensure an accurate fit. Still, there are still plenty of options for all price ranges to shop from online retailers! Here are a few recommendations from our travel families.

For Long-Lasting Durability

Investing in a durable helmet for kids is ideal for frequent skiers. Most higher-end helmets include MIPS Protection, which provides coverage during extreme movement. While cheaper options may seem better to save a few bucks, be aware not all include MIPS. GIRO’s Launch MIPS Snow Helmet For Kids is a mid-range option that does, complete with ventilation, a hard shell, and an easily adaptable form-fit system. Available in various colors, Smith also sells an insulated Zoom Jr. Snow Helmet, with an adjustable strap. POC offers a Kid’s POCito Auric Cut Spin Helmet with shearing pad technology, which can help alleviate the impact of a fall.

Those looking for a more professional-grade helmet may prefer a model from Anon, a lightweight collection from Burton featuring MIPS. Ranging from models like Kids’ Anon Rime 3 Helmet to Kids’ Anon Burner Helmet, features include a magnetic buckle or a flexible adjustment dial.

For a long list of all the helmet brands that include MIPS, click here. We recommend the following safe helmets for kids:

  • The Giro Crue MIPS Youth Snow Helmet is available on Amazon, starting at $94.95. Buy now.
  • The Smith Optics Prospect Jr. MIPS Youth Snowboarding Helmets are available on Amazon, starting at $130.00. Buy now.
  • The POC Kids POCito Auric Cut Spin Helmet is available on Amazon, starting at $179.95. Buy now.
  • The Anon Kids’ Burner Helmet is available on Amazon, starting at $99.95. Buy now.

For Style

Children who don’t need a ski helmet to last them the long haul may prefer a more stylish option. Though you should ensure the helmet is durable, some children may love a more unique option. Buy a Giro helmet, and kids can choose from yellow to green, pink, or red for all ages and interests. Plus, some models even come with a pair of goggles! Wildhorn also sells ski helmets designed for kids in unique patterns. Animal lovers will adore their Spire & Snow Helmet Series, adorned with cute creatures like bears, geckos, giraffes, or yetis.

With many brands on the market, finding the right helmet for your child may seem tricky. Just remember to find a happy medium between a visually pleasing model and one adhering to safety standards. And try it on before your family ski vacation to ensure it fits correctly!

We recommend the following stylish helmets for kids:

  • The GIRO Nine Jr. Kids Snow Helmet is available on Amazon, starting at $88.95. Buy now.
  • The Wildhorn Spire Snow & Ski Helmet w/Goggles for Kids and Youth – ASTM Certified – US Ski Team Official Supplier is available on Amazon, starting at $99.99. Buy now.

Snowsuits for Little Kids

Snowsuits are an essential purchase for your family ski vacation. Usually waterproof, either in a bib style or as overalls, they’re designed for comfort and warmth. Parents with smaller children opt for snowsuits for convenience and the ability to accommodate growth. Arctix Kids offers an Insulated Snow Suit in an overall style for colder climates, made from ThermaTech. If you’re planning on using your kid’s snowsuit multiple times, clothes designed to grow with children are fantastic for frequent skiers!

If you have babies or small children, Columbia sells a variety of snowsuits for children with “Outgrown” technology, which grows with kids. Obermeyer offers a collection of “I-Grow” snow pants and suits too, designed to stay intact as the season changes. Spyder and Burton also offer Room-To-Grow clothing, including pants, jackets, and long-sleeve tops. The innovative design lengthens sleeves and cuffs by two inches, so you won’t have to keep buying!

Ski jackets are crucial to keeping tiny bodies warm! Between shell jackets, insulated models, and three-in-one options, there are lots for families to choose from. It all depends on your destination, though. Thicker layers may seem like the best option for colder climates, but separate layers are also great for temperature versatility. In case you’re confused by all the options, though, we’ve narrowed it down to these family-friendly choices in our guide to ski gear for kids.

Kids Shell Ski Jackets

Popular ski jackets often come in two types: a singular, thick layer, or complete with an inner fleece and outer shell. If you’re searching for a kid-friendly shell jacket, try the lightweight Columbia Boys’ Watertight Jacket, which has a waterproof shell designed to withstand the toughest temperatures. Made from a nylon shell, the Columbia Girls’ Switchback II Waterproof Jacket also features a protective hood, elastic cuffs, and a drop tail to keep your kids dry and warm during your family ski vacation. Columbia also sells a similar Arcadia Jacket for girls, which is waterproof and easily packable for lightweight travel.

Puffer jackets are also another alternative for families skiing in warmer climates. Amazon Essentials sells a version for both boys and girls that’s easy to transport in a drawstring carrying bag.

We recommend the following shells for kids:

  • The Columbia Boys’ Watertight Jacket is available on Amazon, starting at $39.96. Buy now.
  • The Columbia Girls’ Switchback II Waterproof Jacket is available on Amazon, starting at $29.46. Buy now.

Kids Insulated Ski Jacket

Insulated jackets are ideal for families skiing in colder climates. Usually made with a durable exterior, these kid-friendly jackets also feature an inside fleece lining made from various materials. Arctix sells a family-favorite Frost Insulated Winter Jacket for girls, which has a water-resistant, ThermaTech coating to keep warm air in and cold out. Or, opt for their Jackalope Insulated Winter Jacket, available in various fun colors. Arctix also offers a Slalom Insulated Winter Jacket for boys, also made with wind-resistant, waterproof ThermaTech.

If you need something bulkier, consider buying the Wantdo Boys’ Padded Winter Jacket, lined with fleece and cotton to help heat retention. Three-In-One Ski Jackets for Kids

Need a kids’ ski jacket that checks all the boxes? If you can’t decide between a shell or an insulated jacket, opt for a three-in-one, which combines an outer shell covering with insulation for maximum warmth. This option is the most economical and ideal for younger kids. With a three-in-one, you’ll find liners ranging from thin fleece to warmer synthetic wool, which can be worn separately from the jacket.

If you’re heading to a colder climate, consider something like the three-in-one breathable Columbia Girls Bugaboo II, which comes with inner fleece, outer shell, and heat-reflective capabilities. Reebok also sells a Softshell Three-In-One-Jacket for kids in various colors. The GEMYSE Ski Snow Jacket is waterproof, windproof, and stacked with pockets for adventurous kids! The Patagonia Four-In-One Parka is an excellent option for young boys, girls, and even babies. Or, choose from The North Face’s extensive collection of Kids’ Triclimate Jackets!

Pro Tip: Though some more advanced skiers consider three-in-one jackets sub-par in terms of performance, they’re an excellent choice for beginners learning the slopes! As such, we couldn’t skip them in our guide to ski gear for kids.

We recommend the following three-in-one jackets for kids:

  1. The Columbia Girls Bugaboo II is available on Amazon, starting at $77.96. Buy now.

Kids Ski Gloves Buying Guide

Ski gloves are another essential item in our Ultimate Guide To Ski Gear For Kids! Keeping your little one’s fingers warm in chilly temperatures ensures they enjoy your family ski vacation. Of course, some gloves are superior to others when traveling with children. Take a look at our favorites below!

Montana is one of the best states to ski in with kids. Here’s Your Family’s Guide To Skiing in Big Sky, Montana, With Kids.

Five-Finger Gloves

Gloves are a must-have to keep children warm during your family ski vacation. Depending on the climate you’ll be visiting, you’ll decide between lightweight finger-style gloves or mittens, ideal for cooler temperatures. Finger-style gloves are better suited for those traveling to warmer climates, though we suggest buying waterproof gloves no matter which you choose. Hestra makes fantastic options designed to withstand sub-zero temperatures, like their wind and waterproof Gauntlet C-Zone Junior Gloves, with removable liners and a special “snow seal” at the wrist to keep your child’s hands insulated.

Roomy gloves that contain ample space for warmers are also particularly helpful, especially if you plan on visiting a colder ski destination. Burton sells a Kids’ Breathable Glove complete with a hand warmer pocket, waterproof lining, and two layers of fabric. Available in various patterns, N’Ice Caps also offers easy-to-adjust, weatherproof gloves with a hook and loop closure.

We recommend the following five-finger gloves for kids:

  • The Hestra Gauntlet C-Zone Junior Gloves are available on Amazon, starting at $74.95. Buy now.
  • The Burton Kids Breathable Vent Gloves are available on Amazon, starting at $33.39. Buy now.
  • The N’Ice Caps Kids Cold-Weather Waterproof Gloves are available on Amazon, starting at $21.99. Buy now.

Mittens

Mittens are often a warmer alternative to regular, five-finger gloves. Those with younger children will love The North Face’s various mittens, such as Girls’ Mossbud Swirl, Youth Montana, or Toddler Mittens. Each is waterproof, wind-resistant, and warm! If your child is prone to losing their mittens, purchase mitten clips or a pair with an attachable string. Burton offers a pair of Kids’ Gore-Tex Mitten, with a two-layer waterproof fabric and a removable string to keep them in pairs. Hestra also sells Junior Mittens made from Army Leather, with a velcro opening for easy access.

Equipped with a security clip, the Columbia Kids’ Chippewa Long Mittens have a pull-on closure and comfortable fit for younger kids. Or, try the Columbia Kids’ Unisex Fast Trek Mittens, made with deep microfiber fleece for extra warmth. Remember to buy multiple pairs, because even with mitten clips, these tend to get lost!

We recommend the following mittens for kids:

  • The North Face Girls’ Mossbud Swirl Mittens are available on Amazon, starting at $35.00. Buy now.
  • The THE NORTH FACE Youth Montana Gortex Mitt are available on Amazon, starting at $107.62. Buy now.

Heated Gloves

Heated gloves are a good option for cold days. Though there are some non-electric hand warmers, there are also pairs with built-in heating systems. Keep in mind many are designed for adults, so they may only be suitable for older children. One exception is Aroma Season’s Electric Heated Winter Gloves, available for children between ages four and ten. JINPEI also offers Heated Gloves in a small size, with three temperature control levels. QILOVE sells a similar pair made from a polyester and cotton blend. On the other hand, HESTRA has classic Power Heater Gloves from size six to eleven, ideal for older children or tweens.

Made from a soft, breathable material, Snow Deer also sells a pair of Upgraded Heated Gloves for technology-savvy teens, featuring a touch sensor to connect to your phone. Available in size small, Seirus’s HeatTouch Gloves come in a regular or mittens style.

We recommend the following heated gloves for kids:

  • The HESTRA Power Heater Gloves are available directly from HESTRA for $425. Buy now.
  • The Seirus HeatTouch Hellfire Mittens are available directly from Seirus for $474.99. Buy now.
  • The Seirus HeatTouch Hellfire Gloves are available directly from Seirus for $474.99. Buy now.

Glove Clips

Glove clips guarantee your little one’s gloves will never get lost! Easily attachable to snow pants, snowsuits, or jackets, these convenient contraptions are often made from metal or stainless steel. They’re also designed to endure, so rest assured your purchase will last you a while! Created specifically for babies or young children, Senker sells a six-piece set of glove clips with plastic teeth to attach to your children’s sleeves. They’re also multifunctional and can be used to secure pacifiers or even bedsheets!

Some are costlier than others, and it depends on how much room your ski boots have. Made from moisture-wicking tri-blend material, HANPURE sells a pair of Rechargeable Heated Socks ideal for skiing in colder temperatures, equipped with a low, medium, and high setting. SPRING also offers skiing families a pair of Electric Rechargeable Socks in multiple sizes and colors.

For a more heavy-duty choice, consider investing in a more expensive option, like a pair from Sun Will. Keep in mind most heated socks are designed for adults, and many brands don’t sell kids’ sizes. Kids Ski Balaclava Buying Guide

Balaclavas are a skiing must-have for children! Thus, they made our guide to kids’ ski gear. We highly recommend them for kids visiting colder destinations, like the East Coast, Colorado, or the Alps. When staying in warmer areas, a half balaclava is still handy. If you don’t know where to start, we’ve rounded up our favorite balaclavas for kids.

Looking for a ski-in/ski-out experience with kids? Here are the Best Ski-In/Ski-Out Resorts in the U.S. For Families.

Fleece or Wool Balaclavas for Kids

Balaclavas are a popular accessory for kids who ski. Often made from merino wool, fleece, or spandex, they’re a reliable option to help keep kids’ faces warm during the winter. If you’re renting a helmet, it’s also more hygienic to wear a balaclava than to have your child’s head touch the top of it. Lightweight options include the Turtle Fur Kids Shellaclava, designed for ages three to six, and Tough Headwear’s Balaclava Ski Mask For Toddlers. Outdoor Research’s NinjaClava is a fun and playful way to get kids interested in skiing, plus it’s made from breathable nylon and spandex.

Families traveling to colder climates may prefer MERIWOOL’s Merino Wool Balaclava instead, built with an extended neck to protect against the cold. Green Rose also sells a 100% Merino Wool Balaclava for babies! The Redress Kids’ Winter Windproof Balaclava comes in a three-in-one design for triple protection against cold weather.

We recommend the following fleece and wool balaclavas for kids:

  • The Turtle Fur Kids Shellaclava  is available on Amazon, starting at $24.95. Buy now.
  • The Outdoor Research Kids’ NinjaClava is available on Amazon, starting at $25.93. Buy now.
  • The MERIWOOL Merino Wool Balaclava is available on Amazon, starting at $25.99. Buy now.

Magnetic Balaclavas

Magnetic balaclavas are great for preventing condensation. Though fleece or wool balaclavas are often the warmest options, they’re also prone to condensation, which can, unfortunately, freeze. To avoid this, many parents buy children a magnetic balaclava instead, which isn’t as warm but has more breathing room. Seirus Innovation sells a Magnemask Balaclava made from polyester and spandex, with a magnetized face mask you can easily take on and off. North 45 also sells a range of magnetic balaclavas for various types of adventure, ranging from “Heavyweight Expeditions” to “Midweight Adventures.”

Though they’re not designed specifically for kids, they’re available in size small and come with a two-piece design that provides breathing room. They’re also made from merino wool to keep you warm!

We recommend the following magnetic balaclavas for kids:

  • The Seirus Innovation Magnemask Balaclava is available on Amazon, starting at $45.64. Buy now.
  • The North 45 Heavyweight Expeditions Series is available directly from North 45 for $74.95 CAD. Buy now.
  • The North 45 Midweight Adventure Series is available directly from North 45 for $69.95 CAD. Buy now.

Synthetic Balaclavas

Synthetic balaclavas are fantastic for families skiing in warmer temperatures. Whether you’re vacationing in the spring or just need a more lightweight option, materials such as nylon, polyester, and spandex are usually more breathable than wool. BlackStrap sells a thin Kids’ Hood Balaclava that’s great for little ones. It also comes in various bright patterns and colors! Aegend also offers a Kids’ Windproof Balaclava made from polyester and spandex, versatile enough to use in multiple climates.

Buying balaclavas in bulk? Geyoga offers a great deal on a six-pack, which comes in various colors for boys and girls. Families searching for an even lighter alternative should consider buying a fleece neck warmer to cover children’s noses. Or, try a half-balaclava from Rock Bros! Either way, make sure this must-have accessory from our Ultimate Guide to Ski Gear for Kids is on your next shopping list!

We recommend the following synthetic balaclavas for kids:

Goggles block the snow, the sun, and then some! Protection against nature’s elements is essential when skiing with kids, and there’s nobody part more important than our vision. If you’re in the market for a new pair of kid-friendly ski goggles, look no further than the following suggestions!

For Comfort, Extra Protection, and Style

Finding the right ski goggles for kids is crucial. Some are better suited for youngsters, while teens may seek something more advanced. Remember that more expensive goggles often include better fog protection than cheaper ones. Scott Sports and OutdoorMaster nonetheless offer inexpensive goggles with unique perks, like universal helmet compatibility, an anti-fog lens, or facial foam for optimal comfort. Others, such as ZIONOR, offer a variety of colors and a larger size for older children. Baby Banz is great for kids who need extra protection due to allergies, as select models even showcase a double-ventilated seal!

Regardless of the company, check for sturdy, shatterproof, and UV-protected frames. Many parents also buy children’s helmets and goggles from the same retailer to ensure accurate sizing. GIRO and Smith are two popular helmet companies that also sell goggles. Feel free to mix and match, but just make they fit sure beforehand!

We recommend the following ski goggles for kids:

  • The Scott Sports Agent Mini Youth Goggles are available on Amazon, starting at $19.60. Buy now.
  • The GIRO Chico Youth Snow Goggles are available on Amazon, starting at $34.95. Buy now.
  • The Smith Youth Daredevil Snow Goggles are available on Amazon, starting at $35. Buy now.

Cold-Weather Skincare

Skincare plays a crucial role in having a successful ski vacation with kids. While you should pay attention to what your kids are wearing, remember to pack items such as sunscreen, balms, or chapstick to care for any skin irritations that could arise during your trip. Here are a few kid-friendly suggestions in our guide to ski gear for kids that we can’t live without!

Don’t miss learning these 12 Ways To Plan A Family Ski Trip On A Budget!

Sunscreen & Frostbite Fighter

Just because you’re vacationing in a cold climate doesn’t mean you can’t get a sunburn! Packing sunscreen for your family beforehand will save you a lot of trouble during your ski trip. Though any sunscreen with a high enough percentage of SPF (between 30 and 50, depending on your individual needs) will probably do the trick, we recommend buying a sunscreen designed for mountain temperatures.

Dermatone makes a great three-in-one option that protects against sunburn with SPF 23, helps prevent chapping, and also fights frostbite. It’s available in a tin too, but there’s also a portable stick version. SOL Sunguard also sells a sunscreen designed for mountain altitude, available in SPF 50. Mountain Falls also offers a more general Active Sport Sunscreen able to withstand the mountain sun, available in SPF 50 as well. Need something for younger children? Mountain Falls sells sunscreen specifically for babies too!

We recommend the following cold-weather sunscreen for kids:

  • The Dermatone Maxi Tin Face Protection is available on Amazon, starting at $8.99. Buy now.
  • The Dermatone Lips and Face Stick SPF 30 is available on Amazon, starting at $8.99. Buy now.

Chapstick & Balms

You may be applying sunscreen to your child’s face, but don’t forget to take care of other body parts! Lips and hands are especially susceptible to getting chapped and dry in colder temperatures, so carrying an effective chapstick or balm will work wonders. Earth Elements Organics sells an Apres-Ski Balm made from raspberry extracts that kids will love, ideal for soothing chapped lips, faces, and hands.

If you suspect you’ll be exposed to the sun, we suggest buying a kid-friendly chapstick with SPF. Dermatone offers Medicated Lip Balms infused with aloe, vitamin E, and SPF 30 to help combat dry lips in cold climates. It has a thick formula, so you’ll have to reapply less often, saving time, money, and effort. If you’d prefer a more classic option you could find anywhere, you can also opt for the Blistex Medicated Balms with SPF 15.

We recommend the following cold-weather chapstick and balms for kids:

  • The Earth Elements Organics Apres-Ski Balm is available on Amazon, starting at $11.00. Buy now.
  • The Dermatone Medicated Lip Balm is available on Amazon, starting at $8.99. Buy now.
  • The Blistex Medicated Lip Balm is available on Amazon, starting at $2.84. Buy Now.

Gear to Teach Kids How to Ski Yourself

Ski smoothly with your child in front of you! Instead of enrolling in a ski camp, parents can also teach them to ski by themselves. This option is trendy for youngsters who can’t control their speed, properly stop, or turn. For little ones between two and four, you can introduce them to skiing by using a kid-friendly ski harness, which buckles to their body so parents can have a firm grip. LaunchPad and Lucky Bums both sell durable Ski Harnesses For Kids, equipped with removable leashes in case they want some freedom.

Though it’s not recommended for runs that are crowded, this is a safe option for parents who are experienced skiers with a good sense of balance. Have a little skier older than five? You could also opt for an Edgie Wedgie, an easy-to-use clip that attaches to the end of children’s skis to keep them together!

We recommend the following gear to teach kids to ski:

  • The LaunchPad Ski and Snowboard Training Harness is available on Amazon, starting at $34.47. Buy now.
  • The Lucky Bums Ski Trainerglo is available on Amazon, starting at $31.49. Buy now.
  • The Edgie Wedgie is available on Amazon, starting at $12.00. Buy now.

Optional Ski Accessories

Whether it’s hand or feet warmers, a bag to carry all your gear, or a ski harness for little children, some parents forget about a few miscellaneous items when packing for their family ski vacation. Though not absolutely necessary, they can make your trip much more enjoyable! Here are a few choices for your Ultimate Guide to Ski Gear for Kids.

Warmers are essential to enjoying long days in the snow. Before your family ski vacation, you can choose from various air-activated, ready-to-use warmers. With heat lasting up to eight hours, they’re great for putting inside kids’ gloves or pockets. (Make sure there’s enough room to accommodate them, though!) You can also put them in your shoes and stick them under your socks before putting on boots. Tundras and Hot Hands sell multi-purpose packs of these long-lasting warmers, versatile enough to use anywhere on your body.

For a more specific kind, WORLD BIO even features a pair of Disposable Insole Foot Warmers, which are available in kids’ sizes. Warmers are a great alternative to more expensive electric gloves, socks, or other warming options, so they’re great to have on hand for everyday use. Plus, most come in portable, TSA-approved packaging, ideal for traveling with your family!

We recommend the following multi-purpose warmers for kids:

  • The Tundras Hand Warmers are available on Amazon, starting at $17.99. Buy now.
