Power

For Spain, there are two associated plug types, types C and F. Plug type C is the plug that has two round pins and plug type F is the plug that has two round pins with two earth clips on the side. Spain operates on a 230V supply voltage and 50Hz.

Local Weather

The climate in Madrid is low in humidity, therefore making the high temperatures easier to tolerate. Summers are hot with plentiful sunshine but winters can get very cold, with some snowfall. October is still fairly warm with an average daytime temperature of 20 degrees Celsius (68°F) and is still a pleasant time to visit.

Transportation

Car Seat Laws

Everyone in the vehicle must wear a seat belt at all times, and children have to be in the correct safety seat for their age and height. In Spain, children need to be over 135cms tall and over 12 years old before they can travel without a car seat.

Driving

If your foreign license is not in Spanish, you must always carry an official translation or an International Driving Permit (IDP).

Transportation Services

The metro in Madrid is efficient and safe and runs from 6am to 1:30am. This is the easiest way to explore Madrid, along with buses. If you prefer taxis, those are also readily available throughout the city. For more information on transportation in Madrid, click here.

Local Airlines

Some local airlines serving the Madrid area are Vueling, Iberia, and Wamos Air.

Other Things To Know

Tipping Customs

In Spain, tipping is entirely optional and it’s not very common. You may see people leaving small change at cafés and bars and someone tipping at an expensive restaurant. But most of the time you won’t see anyone other than tourists leaving a tip.

Safety Issues

Spain is one of the safest European countries to visit. There is little serious crime. A visitor to Spain should know that there is some pickpocket theft in the metros of the big cities and in crowded places that are frequented by tourists. At night you should not walk on a street alone as a precaution.
