Best Neighborhoods in Central London/the West End/Zone 1 for Families

The West End is home to some of London’s most popular tourist attractions, including Oxford Street, Piccadilly Circus, and Regent Street. This area is also home to many theaters, so it’s one of the best areas to stay in London if you’re interested in seeing a show during your vacation. 

For families planning to ride the tube, the West End and its various neighborhoods are also in Zone 1, a central area of London served by the Underground tube system. Since the London tube price is calculated based on distance, staying in Zone 1 means you’ll likely travel less and spend less on public transportation. 

Westminster & St. James

The area is generally considered safe, though still a bit rough around the edges in some parts, and there’s a lively nightlife here, too – so it might not be ideal for young kids. It’s also located in East London, away from the city’s most famous landmarks, though it’s still technically in Zone 1, so it’s easy to hop on the tube and get around.

This unique neighborhood in northern London is known for its markets, street art, and alternative music scene. And since it’s located just north of central London and within Zone 2, it’s still easy to get into the city when you want to do some sightseeing. 

To start exploring the neighborhood, check out Camden Market. This large market is full of stalls selling everything from clothes to souvenirs. Or, you could also check out The Stables Market, which is housed in an old stable block. Camden was also the birthplace of famous British musician Amy Winehouse. The neighborhood is filled with statues, street art, and other memorials honoring the late singer, including a statue near the Stables Market.
