Known for its coastal landscapes, restored architecture, and rich history, this quaint city is perfect for your next family vacation. Whether you want to unwind at Forsyth Park, take an Old Town Trolley Tour, or enjoy a dolphin tour on Tybee Island, our itinerary covers some of the best things to do in Savannah with kids. Day 1: Forsyth Park, Historic Savannah, River Street

Start your first day with a walking tour of Savannah’s historic district. Families can explore the cobblestone streets lined with oak trees and appreciate the well-preserved 18th and 19th-century architecture. Highlights may include the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, Colonial Park Cemetery, and the Owens-Thomas House. Instead of a walking tour, active families can also consider renting bicycles.

Then, visit Forsyth Park, one of Savannah’s most iconic green spaces. Stroll one of the paved paths to the fountain near the park’s northern end, surrounded by a gorgeous patch of manicured flowers. Two massive playgrounds also provide space for little ones to run around, featuring sprinklers to cool down during summertime. If you’re lucky, you might catch a local event or farmers’ market! You can also walk through Chippewa Square, one of Savannah’s charming public squares.

Afternoon Activity: River Street

Indulge in a Southern-style lunch at Mrs. Wilkes’ Dining Room and feast on fried chicken, collard greens, cornbread, and other classic Southern dishes. After lunch, head down to River Street, Savannah’s bustling waterfront area. Browse kiosks at the River Street Market Place, pass historical monuments like the “Waving Girl,” and taste local honey at Savannah Bee Company. Don’t forget to get a sweet treat from Leopold’s Ice Cream or River Sweet Treats, two must-visit spots on any Savannah itinerary with kids!

Evening Activity: Ghost Tour and Dinner At The Olde Pink House

In the evening, families can experience Savannah’s spooky side with a ghost tour. During your tour, you’ll visit points of interest like Savannah’s haunted mansions, cemeteries, a war battlefield, and more. Who knows, you may even spot some ghosts!

Then, grab dinner at The Olde Pink House. It’s housed in a historic mansion and known for its Southern-inspired cuisine and elegant atmosphere.

Day 2: Tricentennial Park, Old Town Trolley Tour

A visit to Tricentennial Park is a must on any Savannah itinerary for kids! Located in Savannah’s downtown district, this 25-acre museum complex is home to some of the city’s best museums, including the Savannah History Museum, Georgia State Railroad Museum, and the Savannah Children’s Museum. Before you head to the museums, be sure to explore the picturesque grounds. You’ll pass beautiful gardens, statues, and fountains along the way! Pack your own picnic lunch to eat in the park and enjoy the surroundings.

Families can also explore Battlefield Memorial Park, a section of Tricentennial Park that houses Price Of Freedom. This stone memorial is dedicated to those who lost their lives during the American Revolution. For more information, feel free to take a Battlefield Tour.

Afternoon Activity: Savannah’s History Museum, Children’s Museum

Once you’re done exploring the park, check out the museums. The Children’s Museum is ideal for young kids with a lot of energy. Kids will love running around the playground, interacting with the sensory garden, or relaxing in the reading nook. Adventurous little ones can even stroll through the Exploration Maze, which tests their motor skills to teach them how to navigate the world.

History buffs can’t miss Savannah’s History Museum. Between Civil War Uniforms, Forrest Gump’s iconic bench, and Native American artifacts, there’s plenty to keep kids interested during your visit. Even younger kids will appreciate the informative exhibits, though it’s recommended for little ones six and up. There are also multiple hands-on plays and trivia quizzes to stay immersed in the material as you move along.

Evening Activity: Old Town Trolley Tour

Families who want to see historic Savannah and other landmarks in the city illuminated will love a nighttime Old Town Trolley Tour. Pass by the Bull Street Corridor, Madison Square, the Massie Heritage Museum, and City Market, among other places. Since the Old Town Trolley is hop-on, hop-off, you’ll be able to explore each location for as long as you want before boarding the bus again. Kids who love ghost stories can even take a haunted trolley tour, where you’ll see the city’s spookiest corners!

For dinner, the Bull Street Corridor is home to tons of restaurants (and bars for a couple’s date night!) Check out Hitch for classic American with a twist or The Collins Quarter for Australian-inspired cuisine!

Day 3: Chatham County

Chatham County, a few miles from Savannah, has plenty of kid-friendly attractions for families to enjoy during an itinerary with kids. If you want to explore beyond the city, you can check out the Savannah National Wildlife Refuge. This wildlife refuge houses freshwater marshes, rivers, creeks, and bottomland hardwoods. Explore the park with the four-mile auto tour and see waterbirds, bobcats, and gators from your car! Or, hike one of the paved paths throughout the property. You can also hunt deer, turkey, and waterfowl (ages 6 and up).

History buffs will love a visit to Old Fort Jackson! Dating back to 1812, this restored fort sits on the city’s East River, once serving as protection from sea attacks. From exhibits detailing unknown facts about the American Civil War to attacks on escaped slaves, we guarantee you’ll learn something new during your Savannah itinerary with kids. Children will especially love taking a walking tour of the grounds, where they can run free.

Stay long enough for a reenactment and you’ll even get to witness actors march, assume their positions, and fire a cannon or musket. Just remember to bring some bug spray – the insects can get feisty!

Evening Activity: The Pirates’ House

For dinner, head back to Savannah to visit The Pirates’ House, a pirate-themed restaurant located in a historic inn. It’s said that the inn was a meeting place for pirates sailing the Seven Seas, and it retains a quirky vibe that kids will love, especially the waitstaff dressed in pirate garb. Plus, the food is good and there’s a themed kid’s menu with “Pirate Pasta,” “Long John Silver Hamburger,” and even cute mocktails!

Day 4: Tybee Island

Three days are plenty to see Savannah’s highlights on an itinerary with kids, but families with extra time to spare can also plan a trip to Tybee Island. Sitting just off the coast of Savannah, it offers a unique blend of southern charm and coastal relaxation during the summer months.

Tybee Island comprises four main areas: North Beach, Mid Island Beach, South Beach, and Back River. Many families like staying on the north end, which features the historic Tybee Island Lighthouse and Museum. Adventure seekers can also try their hand at parasailing, jet skiing, or paddleboarding here. For yummy kid-friendly sandwiches and seafood, check out The Crab Shack for lunch.

Afternoon Activity: Dolphin Watching

In the afternoon, enjoy some fishing or dolphin watching. Multiple family-friendly companies offer it, such as Tybee Island Dolphin Adventure Tours or Captain Mike’s Dolphin Tours. Depending on which you choose, the tour should last about an hour, including an entertaining voiceover by one of the guides. Either way, kids will love watching the friendly dolphins swim right beside them and try to earn their attention!

Evening Activity: Dinner On The South End & Fireworks

For the last evening of your Savannah itinerary with kids, there’s plenty to do on the south end of Tybee Island too. Families who are interested in marine life can check out Tybee’s Marine Center. Or, for a historical experience, visit nearby Fort Pulaski.

Then, in the evening, stroll along Tybee Island’s Pier and Pavilion to take in the atmosphere and grab something to eat. There are lots of kid-friendly restaurants selling burgers, seafood, etc., like Pier 16, Spanky’s Beachside, and Riptide Bar & Grill. If you’re visiting on a Friday night during the summer, you can even catch fireworks!
