With travel picking up again, we are all yearning for a getaway at the perfect hotel with our family. Since hotel prices are surging, one of the best ways to get a deal on your next hotel stay is to use the points earned from your travel rewards credit card. This can easily wipe away the cost of a few nights — or even your entire stay. From the points earned from the welcome bonus to your everyday spending, it is quite easy to accrue a good amount of points quickly. This is why it is important to get the best hotel rewards credit card for families.

On top of the points earned, you’ll also receive many perks from your hotel credit card. This will only enhance your family’s travel experience! From free night certificates to automatic hotel status, many benefits will offset the annual fee. (Or even allow you to come out ahead!) So if you are looking for a new credit card for your next hotel stay, here are our recommendations. Keep reading to learn more about the Best Hotel Credit Cards For Families!

Best Hotel Credit Cards For Families

Between travel rewards, flexible redemption options, and more, these hotel credit cards are great for families. Keep reading for specific reasons why!

Chase Sapphire Preferred

Welcome bonus: 60,000 Chase Ultimate Reward points after you spend $4,000 on the card within the first three months of card membership. $95 annual fee. Application link.

The Chase Sapphire Preferred card is one of the best travel rewards credit cards for families — for both hotel stays and just overall travel. With this card, you’ll earn Chase Ultimate Reward points, which can be redeemed in two popular methods.

How To Redeem Points With The Chase Sapphire Preferred

First, Chase has its own travel portal, which allows you to book travel — supported through Expedia — with your points earned. When you redeem points through the portal, you’ll receive a 25% bonus. So 60,000 points, for example, are worth a fixed $750 towards travel. This is a nice option if you are looking to stay at a boutique hotel property where you can’t traditionally use your points. This option also allows your family to book any hotel room — not just a standard room. This can come in handy with families who are looking for a suite. It also works well for airfare, car rentals, and even activities at your destination. Flexibility makes this the best travel credit card for families.

Or, you can transfer your points to one of 14 partner travel programs at a 1-to-1 ratio. This means 1,000 Chase Ultimate Reward points equals 1,000 points in the partner program of your choice. There are three hotel partnerships, which include: World of Hyatt, Marriott Bonvoy, and InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG). While all three programs offer many family-friendly properties throughout the world, you’ll typically receive the best value at Hyatt properties. This is because the Hyatt rewards program has a more favorable award chart, where you can redeem just 25,000 points for a free night which would normally cost around 60,000 points (or even more) at Marriott or IHG — for the same quality hotel or resort.

One of my favorite family-friendly resorts includes the Hyatt Ziva Cancun, for instance. This is an all-inclusive resort on the peninsula of Cancun’s hotel zone. This property costs just 25,000 points a night — for two guests — and kids under three are free. For any additional guests in the room, it’ll cost you 12,500 points a night, or typically, you can pay just $100 per night for each additional child (you’ll need to check with the hotel directly).

Right now, the Chase Sapphire Preferred is offering a welcome offer of 60,000 Chase Ultimate Reward points after you spend $4,000 on the card within the first three months of card membership. If you redeem your points through Chase’s travel portal, that’ll net you an easy $750 towards flexible travel.  Or, if you prefer to transfer your points to partner programs, I typically get around 2 cents per point. This means the 60,000 points earned could be worth as much as $1,200 towards your next trip — depending on how you redeem your points.

For example, this will earn you two nights at the all-inclusive Hyatt Ziva Cancun, three nights at the Grand Hyatt Baha Bar, and four nights at the Andaz San Diego. There are endless opportunities for your family to travel and use your points both domestically and internationally. Again, making this card one of the best hotel credit cards for families.

Perks Of The Chase Sapphire Preferred

After the welcome offer, you’ll continue to earn 3 points per dollar spent on dining, select streaming services, and select online grocery purchases, 2 points per dollar spent on travel (or 5 total points if purchased through Ultimate Rewards), and 1 point per dollar spent on everything else. And through a limited time (through March 2022), you’ll receive 5 total points per dollar spent on Lyft rides.

One of the new perks of the card is that you’ll earn a 10% anniversary point bonus on all purchases made the previous year. So if you end up spending $10,000 on the card throughout the year, you’ll earn an extra 1,000 points on that card member’s anniversary. Another new perk is that you’ll receive a $50 annual credit on hotel stays purchased through Ultimate Rewards — which is powered through Expedia. This is an easy way to receive an additional $50 saving on your family’s next hotel stay, or you can think about it as effectively as cutting the annual fee in half.

Other great perks include travel and shopping protection benefits. For example, if you paid for your flight with your Chase Sapphire Preferred card and your flight is delayed 12+ hours or requires you to stay overnight, Chase will reimburse any reasonable out-of-pocket expenses, up to $500 per passenger. This benefit came in extremely handy a few years back during a family trip in Portugal. Our return flight was delayed 36 hours, which resulted in an extra hotel night, eating out for many more meals, and additional taxi rides. Fortunately, though, Chase reimbursed us with little to no hassle. For all of the reasons above, this is why we recommend this card as one of the best travel rewards credit cards for families.

Welcome bonus: 60,000 miles after you spend $3,000 on the card within the first three months of card membership. $95 annual fee. Application link.

Aren’t sure where exactly you are looking to earn and redeem your points? If you know you want one of the best travel rewards credit cards that will help your family travel for free, the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card will provide you with a ton of flexibility. With this card, you earn a flat 2 miles per dollar spent on every purchase you make. Unlike many other credit cards on the list, there are no category bonuses. So simple!

How To Redeem Points With The Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card

When you are looking to redeem your miles, you can essentially wipe away any travel purchase you make at a fixed 1 cent per mile. After you make your purchase, your statement online will let you know which purchases qualify as “travel.” From there, you can easily redeem your miles within 90 days from the date of purchase. With this earning and redemption program, you are ultimately earning 2% back — towards travel — on every purchase you make.

However, similar to Chase, Capital One also partners with 19 different travel loyalty programs. Unfortunately, there are only two hotel programs, while the rest are airline partners. The two hotel programs include Wyndham Rewards and Choice Privileges Rewards. While these two hotel programs have some great properties around the world, they aren’t as well known for family vacations. Wyndham has a decent amount of blackout dates with their resort properties. Choice only allows you to book award stays 100 days out. With that being said, if you can find a property that works for your family, their award chart can be quite favorable.

Booking Your Stay With Capital One Venture Rewards Points

Wyndham also allows you to book a one-bedroom suite at many of their vacation properties for just 15,000 points per night. For example, we were able to stay at the Club Wyndham Park City, a slopeside hotel on the Canyons side of Park City. We had a one-bedroom suite with a kitchen and washer/dryer. This is the perfect vacation for ski families to use their hotel points earned from the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card.

Similarly, Choice also offers many vacation club properties where families can book 1-bedroom, 2-bedroom, and many times even 3-bedroom hotel rooms. The best part about their program is that they don’t differentiate the number of points required based on the room size. So if there happens to be a 3-bedroom suite available, you can use a relatively low number of points earned from your Capital One Rewards credit card. Again, an ideal option for families, making this another great credit card for families.

Perks Of The Capital One Venture Rewards Card

Right now, the card is offering a 60,000 point welcome offer after you spend $3,000 on the card within the first three months of card membership. If you use your miles to wipe away travel purchases, that is worth a fixed $600 towards travel.

The card also offers up to a $100 credit towards a Global Entry or TSA PreCheck application fee, once every four years. Global Entry (which also includes TSA PreCheck) allows you to zip through the customs line when entering the United States. Meanwhile, TSA PreCheck gives you special access to security lines within the US. Once approved, Global Entry and TSA PreCheck are valid for five years. Best of all, this statement credit can be used for another family member. You just need to pay for the application with your Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card. The names do not need to match.

IHG® Rewards Club Premier Credit Card

Welcome bonus: 125,000 IHG Rewards Club points after you spend $3,000 on the card within the first three months of card membership. $0 intro annual fee for the first year, then $89. Application link.

The IHG® Rewards Club Premier Credit Card is one of the best hotel credit cards for families. Not necessarily for your everyday spending, but for the benefits alone! This hotel credit card has no annual fee for the first year and then a low annual fee for every year thereafter, it’s the perfect card to get now and then determine whether or not it works for your future hotel needs.

Perks to the IHG Rewards Club Premier Credit Card

Holiday Inn Club Vacations Oak N’ Spruce Resort in the Berkshires

One of the best benefits of this card is that you’ll receive an annual reward night on the card’s anniversary (starting on year two of having the card!). This certificate can be used at any IHG property, which includes many popular brands, including InterContinental Hotels, Kimpton, Holiday Inn Express, Hotel Indigo, Crowne Plaza, and more. While there are no date restrictions, the certificate can only be used at a property that costs 40,000 points or less for that particular night. One of my favorite places to redeem this certificate is the Holiday Inn Resort in Aruba. The property is less than 40,000 points per night at times. It is right on the ocean and pre-COVID they even offer a complimentary kids’ club.

Another strong benefit is that you’ll receive your fourth night free when redeeming points. For families that stay at properties for an extended time, this allows the points earned from the welcome offer to go even further. The card also carries cell phone protection. So, if you pay your monthly cell phone bill with the IHG® Rewards Club Premier Credit Card, all family members on the bill will be protected in case of theft or damage. You’ll receive up to $800 in reimbursement per claim (up to $1,000 per year). There’s a maximum of two claims per year and a $50 deductible per claim. For a card with such a low annual fee, this is a huge perk.

Lastly, cardmembers automatically receive IHG Platinum Elite status. While this mid-tier status isn’t nearly as good as having status at other chain properties, you’ll still receive bonus points on paid stays and incidentals that get charged to your room, and your points never expire.

Downsides To The IHG Rewards Club Premier Credit Card

The one downside of this card is that you don’t earn too many points on your everyday purchases. You’ll receive 10 points per dollar spent at IHG properties, which is great. But you’ll only receive 2 points per dollar spent at gas stations, grocery stores, and restaurants. And then 1 point per dollar spent on everything else. While this might seem similar to the earning rate of other credit cards, IHG points aren’t worth nearly as much. This makes this a great card to hold onto for the benefits, but not a card you’ll want to use for most of your credit card purchases.

Marriott Bonvoy Boundless™ Credit Card

Best Marriott Credit Card For Families

Welcome bonus: Earn 3 free nights (valued at 50,000 points per night) after spending $3,000 on purchases in the first three months from account opening. $95 annual fee. Application link.

Instead of offering a straight points welcome bonus, the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless™ Credit Card is offering the opportunity to earn 3 free nights, where each night can be used at a property costing up to 50,000 points per night. If you are able to maximize the hotels where you use the free nights, this is worth up to 150,000 points total! Additionally, with this welcome offer you’ll earn 10x points per dollar spent at gas stations, restaurants and grocery stores within 6 months from account opening (on up to $2,500 in combined purchases). Plus, this is also one of the best Marriott credit cards for families!

Perks Of The Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Credit Card

One card benefit is that you’ll receive complimentary Marriott Silver elite status. Although this is Marriott’s lowest level elite status tier, having some status is better than no status at all. Plus, it’ll still earn you complimentary checkout and bonus points on paid stays. Also, if you spend $35,000 on the card each account year, you’ll automatically earn Marriott Gold elite status. This could potentially give your family a bigger and nicer room upon check-in.

With this card, you’ll earn 6 points per dollar spent (in addition to the regular points earned from being a Marriott Bonvoy member and having status) and 2 points per dollar spent on all other purchases.

Using Your Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Credit Card Award Night Certificate

Another ongoing perk of the card — separate from the welcome offer — is that cardmembers will receive an award night certificate every membership year. It starts with the second year as a member at a property costing up to 35,000 points. This certificate alone outweighs the cost of the annual fee, making the card one to hold on to year after year.

This certificate will allow your family to stay at some amazing properties both domestically and internationally, for ultimately just the cost of the annual fee. Some family-friendly Marriott hotels where you may be able to use this certificate include Sheraton Princess Kaiulani in Honolulu, St. Kitts Marriott Resort & The Royal Beach Casino, Sheraton Steamboat Villas; Marriott Harbour Lake Orlando, Marriott Puerto Vallarta Resort & Spa, and Springhill Suites Anaheim Resort Convention Center. Being able to use the certificate at these resorts is another reason why the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless™ Credit Card is not only the best Marriott credit card for families, but also one of the best hotel credit cards for families.

Application link.

Perks of the Hilton Honors American Express Surpass Card

One of the best benefits of the Hilton Honors American Express Surpass® Card is that all card members receive automatic Gold status. This is Hilton’s mid-tier status level and the only card on the list that will grant you this high of a status level simply for being a card member. The benefits that come with Gold status include: your fifth night free on award stays, an 80% bonus on points earned while staying at Hilton properties, space-available room upgrades, and complimentary food. All of these perks — and more — make this the best Hilton credit card for families.

Hilton recently revamped its food benefit where all Gold members traditionally received complimentary breakfast. Now, if you are staying at a U.S. property, you’ll instead receive daily food and beverage credit. For hotels outside of the U.S., you’ll still receive continental breakfast. (Many hotels are known to give full hot breakfast to guests with status.) Being able to receive a credit towards food, especially when traveling with a family, can be huge and save you a decent amount of money on your next vacation. With the Hilton Honors American Express Surpass® Card, you’ll also receive a free weekend night reward certificate after you spend $15,000 on purchases in a calendar year. Although the certificate is traditionally limited to just weekend nights, due to COVID-19, Hilton is allowing all certificates issued through 2022 to be used any night of the week.

Cardmembers will also receive complimentary Priority Pass Select membership. It’ll give you 10 complimentary lounge visits every year at over 1,200+ airport lounges (enrollment is required). You can then pay for additional lounge visits, if needed. You can then pay for additional lounge visits, if needed.

Want More Perks for your Family at Hilton Properties?

Now, if you are striving for Diamond elite status, the Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card will extend complimentary status your way, with no additional spending. It is the only hotel-specific credit card that will give you top-tier status solely for being a card member. The main perk of Diamond status is that all members will receive complimentary lounge access. If your family is staying at a property with a lounge, this will feed your family throughout the day. Most lounges offer complimentary breakfast and sometimes even snacks, drinks, and appetizers throughout the day. Depending on where you’re traveling, having the best Hilton credit card for families could save your family a huge amount of money on food costs.

The Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card also offers many other perks to help offset the incredibly high $450 annual fee. Enjoy up to $250 resort credits each cardmember year, up to $250 airline fee credits each calendar year, and Priority Pass Select membership that provides unlimited visits.

World of Hyatt Credit Card

Best Hyatt Credit Card For Families

Welcome bonus: Up to 60,000 World of Hyatt points — 30,000 points after you spend $3,000 on the card within the first three months of card membership, plus up to an additional 30,000 points by earning 2 bonus points per $1 spent on purchases (that earn 1 bonus point), up to $15,000 spent in the first six months of card membership. $95 annual fee. Application link.

If you are looking to stay at a Hyatt property for your next trip, the World of Hyatt Credit Card is a great card to add to your wallet. Although the welcome bonus is more complex than some of the other offers on this list, you can ultimately earn up to 60,000 bonus points with enough credit card spend. Of course, the Chase Sapphire Preferred card will earn you more points — especially since points transfer to Hyatt at a 1:1 ratio — but there are some Hyatt-specific perks of being a cardmember that you won’t receive with the Sapphire Preferred.

Earning Status With The World of Hyatt Credit Card

Hyatt Ziva Cancun

One of the best features of the World of Hyatt Credit Card is that you can earn Globalist elite status — Hyatt’s top-tier status level — solely on credit card spend. In a normal year, earning status typically requires 60 tier-qualifying nights. But in 2021, Hyatt has dropped that amount in half to just 30 nights. One of the perks of the credit card is that you’ll earn 5 qualifying nights towards status on a yearly basis. This leaves you with just 25 nights to earn in 2021. Then, with every $5,000 spent on the card, you’ll also earn 2 stays towards status. Of course, this requires a significant amount of credit card spend. But if you have expensive purchases — or own a business — then this can get you one step further to earning status.

Hyatt Globalist status perks include waived resort fees on paid nights, complimentary room upgrades based on availability, late checkout, free parking when using points, club lounge access, or complimentary breakfast. This will not only save your family money on your next vacation, but also allow you to stay in luxury. This is why the World of Hyatt Credit Card is one of the best family credit cards for hotel stays.

Additionally, Hyatt offers milestone benefits, so when you hit a certain number of tier-qualifying nights  — which also can be earned with credit card spend — you’ll earn complimentary lounge certificates, bonus points, free night awards, and suite upgrades. The suite upgrades are by far my favorite where you can secure a standard suite at the time of booking your reservation. This is a huge perk for families and one that my family takes advantage of quite often. Imagine being able to automatically stay in a suite for no extra cost?

Perks Of The World of Hyatt Credit Card

Another perk of the card is that you’ll receive a complimentary award night certificate on your account anniversary year. This certificate can be used at up to a category 4 property, which ultimately pays for the annual fee. This certificate can be used at many family-friendly hotels. Book the Hyatt Regency Chesapeake Bay Golf Resort, Manchester Grand Hyatt San Diego, Hyatt Regency Monterey Hotel and Spa on Del Monte Golf Course; Hyatt Place Keystone, Grand Hyatt Washington, Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort and Spa, and many more.

You’ll also earn 4 points per dollar spent at Hyatt properties. (In addition to the points earned from being a World of Hyatt member and having elite status.) Plus, 2 points per dollar spent at restaurants, 2 points per dollar spent on airline tickets purchased directly from the airline, 2 points per dollar spent on fitness clubs and gym memberships, 2 points per dollar spent on local transit and commuting (including taxis, mass transit, tolls, and ride-share services) and 1 point per dollar spent on all other purchases. This high earning rate makes the World of Hyatt Credit Card one of the best credit cards for hotel points.

With Hyatt points worth more than most other hotel-specific programs, this is one of the better hotel credit cards to use for your category bonus purchases — and even everyday spending.
