To help you plan a visit to Lecce, here are some of the best things to do in the city and some great places to eat.
If you are doing a day trip to Lecce with a car, arrive early because parking can be challenging. There are parking options surrounding the old city, most of which require a parking fee. We do not recommend driving within the ancient city because streets are very narrow and parking is sparse for non-residents. You can also reach Lecce with Trenitalia. To reach Lecce, there are direct trains from many Italian cities, including Rome and Bologna. Alternatively, direct routes can also be made from Bari (just shy of 2 hours), Monopoli (about 75 minutes), and Brindisi (about 30 minutes).
Things to Do in Lecce with Kids
Make your entrance into the historic old city through the impressive Porta Napoli. Its colossal arch will undoubtedly enchant kids. It sets the perfect tone for visiting Lecce Centro Storico. Porta Rudiae and Porta San Biagio also offer grand entrances into the old city. Next, walk to the centrally located Roman Amphitheater in Piazza Sant’Oronzo. Walk around the amphitheater to take it all in, or take a guided tour to learn about its history. Only recently discovered at the turn of the 20th century, it’s one of the best-preserved ancient sites in Italy. Then, check out Piazza del Duomo, one of the most beautiful parts of Lecce, with an intimate feel and views of ornate buildings and churches.
If you’re interested in visiting more than one of the many churches in Lecce, the city tourism office offers bundled tickets. Basilica di Santa Croce is a fine example of extravagant baroque architecture with a lovely courtyard. Then, Chiesa di Santa Chiara is a striking Catholic church with many ornate religious works inside. Located in Piazza del Duomo, Lecce Cathedral is free to enter and is at its best when lit up at night.
