Explore the neighborhood of Belém, home to landmarks such as the Jerónimos Monastery and Belém Tower. Remember to grab some delicious pastéis de nata at Pasteis de Belém! From here, families can also hop on an old-fashioned tram towards Alfama. Winding alleys filled with charming little shops and cafes await! Castle Adventures

Óbidos is a charming medieval town that shouldn’t be missed when searching for what to see in Portugal with kids! Situated on a hilltop and surrounded by ancient walls, this picturesque destination offers a plethora of activities for families to enjoy together. Plus, it’s only an hour and a half north of Lisbon and accessible by train! 

Start by exploring the Castle of Óbidos, which dates back to the 12th century and provides panoramic views from its towers. Another highlight for families is walking along the impressive city walls that encircle Óbidos. Children can let their imaginations run wild as they pretend to be knights defending this medieval fortress! Kids will also love exploring the narrow maze-like alleyways, where they can discover numerous artisan shops selling traditional handicrafts and mouth-watering treats. Or, hop aboard a Tuk-tuk Tour. You’ll ride through cobblestone alleys while listening to fascinating tales about Óbidos’ history! A half-hour away in Lourinhã, families can also visit Lourinhã Dino Park, which showcases a “Jurrasic Park” experience with life-sized models of dinosaurs, fossils, and more fun for dinosaur lovers!

Downtown, families can take a walk along Rua da Sofia, a shopping street with traditional stores selling sweets such as pastéis de Santa Clara or local crafts like handmade ceramics. Additionally, the island’s stunning natural landscapes provide opportunities for adventurous hikes, such as exploring Madeira’s highest peak, Pico Ruivo, perfect for adrenaline-seeking teens! 

Kids will be impressed by the cute villages and colorful houses lining the streets of Funchal, Madeira’s capital. Explore the sprawling Madeira Botanical Garden, which has lots of different pathways filled with beautiful plants as well as information about the island’s African history. Then, ride the cable car up to Monte Palace Tropical Garden. Here, you can wander through more gardens and spot whimsical statues. There’s also a fun toboggan run! The Laurisilva Forest, aka the Laurel Forest, also has different hiking trails that offer families a chance to immerse themselves in nature. Enjoy endless fun in the sun on Praia da Batata, a crowded beach closest beach to the city center. For a more low-key experience, visit Praia de Porto de Mos, a large sandy beach surrounded by golden cliffs, or Meia Praia, known for surfing. Other activities for families include hiking along the rugged cliffs, kayaking, and dolphin watching. Remember to explore the winding streets of Old Lagos, where you can see history come alive at Forte da Ponta da Bandeira, then walk by the water in Jardim da Constituição. For a fun way to see Lagos and the surrounding areas in the Algarve, families can take a special Santa Bernarda Pirate Ship, which departs from Portimão to explore the beautiful Ponta da Piedade in Lagos.
